Le Lobgesang (Song of Praise), commissioned by the city of Leipzig to its Kapellmeister Mendelssohn to commemorate, in 1840, the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing, falls somewhat into the three categories. But unlike Beethoven's 9th, this is a symphonic miniature in three movements, intended to introduce in the manner of an overture the sung part of the work, which is twice as large. Thus, this magnificent Symphony-Cantata blossoms into a grand vocal and choral fresco.
