With Barefoot in the Head, the Californian band Chris Robinson Brotherhood pushes boundaries and explores new musical territory with more enthusiasm and wonder than ever. This new album highlights the ongoing songwriting development that Chris Robinson has undertaken with his accomplices, guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Tony Leone, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and bassist Jeff Hill. It also reveals a playful kind of boldness that is only possible among five artists perfectly on the same wavelength. The album opens with the funky americana-sounding "Behold the Seer," followed by the dreamy "She Shares my Blanket," where Robinson paints cinematic scenes of a winter romance in the mountains. Barry Sless’s elegant pedal steel as a guest on "Blonde Light of Day" casts a warm haze, while "Blue Star Woman" sounds like T-Rex in overalls in a rural West Coast community. Throughout the album, the band intertwines blues, country and psychedelic rock, and even channels 60s freewheeling folk on "Hark, the Herald Hermit Speaks," blurring the lines between imagination and reality. Finally, on "Glow," inspired by English psych, Robinson, alongside the renowned sarod player Alam Khan, achieves “one of the most special things I’ve ever done in the studio”!
