Fish

Description

Spotted by Radio Nova on the occasion of the release of their first album Start Fresh, the Parisian collective Chlorine Free is the spearhead of the new electro funk jazz scene. At first glance, one quickly thinks of the mythical Headhunters, Herbie Hancock’s legendary funk group. But stopping at this comparison would be a serious mistake, because the septet has made a point of digesting not only the golden age of hip-hop (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul...), but also Nu Soul (D'Angelo, Galliano) and experimental electro (Squarepusher, a reference claimed by Virgile Lorach, the band’s leader). “Le Fish”, their new album, is the reflection of this heritage. If the group pays its debt to the greats, it is to better free itself from them. There are various gems straight out of the golden age of funk-jazz, hallucinogenic electro interludes, and the live hip-hop that made the group famous on their first album. Virgile Lorach: Bass Michael Escande: Drums Doc Jones: Scratch David Monet: Clavinet - MiniMoog Romain Clerc-Renaud: Rhodes Benoît Giffard: Trombone Yann Clery: Flute - Vocals “An inspired groove that never gets lost in endless improvs: this Parisian big band has it all. At first glance, it’s hard not to think of the mythical Headhunters, yet the test tubes and other flasks of the Parisian funk gang Chlorine Free contain many other substances with groovy potential. For this septet has made a point of digesting golden-age Hip-Hop (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul), experimental electro (Squarepusher, a claimed reference), and even contemporary nu soul.”
