Already authors of a promising debut album (Lacuna) in 2014, the English band Childhood returns with Universal High, recorded last summer in Atlanta by the legendary Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter), set to be released on August 25 via Marathon Artists. The band's music, which blends psychedelic and indie rock, has now transformed into a new 70's soul sound that draws inspiration from Curtis Mayfield, The Isley Brothers, and Shuggie Otis. The leader, Ben Romans-Hopecraft, explains: "Universal High represents a mental and musical shift for us. I have been immersed in soul music, pop classics, and all so-called 'groove' music since my childhood. These influences emerged and took over when we started writing this album." Ben is also the driving force behind this album for the band, having made a name for himself as a songwriter through his collaborations with his new wingman Sean Lennon and with Saul Adamczewski from Fat White Family on the projects Warmduscher and Insecure Men. It's up to you to discover the first single from this rebirth, California Light, whose video, created by their English friend Georgio Barbers, captures memories of their childhood neighborhoods and a nostalgia for the seventies.
