Ambassador of French shitgazing since the release of their first album in 2008 on Born Bad rcds, Cheveu returns more masterful than ever in their chaotic style on their label of choice. The three Bordeaux natives, now Parisians by adoption, invent with "1000" the symphonic lo-fi. True to their flea market setup that defines their sound (rhythms ensured by binary and gritty Casios, a minimal delta blues guitar, and a slacker incantatory vocal), Cheveu has once again made their second-hand machines work hard to extract the best from them. Their music remains as difficult to categorize as ever. Some will mention Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, or Metal Urbain, while others see more of the DIY pop aspect, invoking early Beck and Beastie Boys, Butthole Surfers, or Ween. In any case, with "1000," Cheveu distances themselves from the references or chic labels attached by the specialized press, to escape into another genre, their own genre. The improbable appearance of string arrangements made possible by the invitation of young Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov further broadens the band's sonic spectrum. These strings, recorded in Tel Aviv during the band's recent tour, bring an unexpected sophistication to the world of CHEVEU.
