Chet Baker's immense talent maintained a complex relationship with the music world, and after nearly twenty years of a career, he withdrew. In 1973, he made a vow to return to the forefront, reconnecting with the direct jazz that had launched his career. The album « She Was Too Good To Me » was released in 1974 on the legendary CTI label of Creed Taylor, which then counted among its artists Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Deodato and many others, and is considered the album of Baker's great comeback. This record is a magnificent tribute to the bebop sound of the early 1950s, imbued with the innovative spirit characteristic of CTI. Bob James plays electric piano on it, infusing the tracks with a funky touch that fully inscribes them in the spirit of the 1970s. As always, Baker surrounded himself with a lineup of exceptional musicians, including Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums (both former members of Miles Davis's team during his fusion period), Paul Desmond on alto saxophone and Hubert Laws on flute. Add to that the talent of master arranger Don Sebesky, and you get an anthology-worthy CTI record.
