Chet Baker Sings - Vinyle Bleu

Description

It's hard to tell whether Chet Baker was a trumpeter who sang or a singer who played trumpet. When the 24-year-old Californian trumpeter began his singing career in 1954, his singing was revolutionary; as delicate and clear as his trumpet playing, with an equally bright, vibrato-free timbre, Baker was unlike any other jazz singer. His first vocal session, recorded in February 1954 and covering tracks seven to fourteen on this record, sounds so innocent you'd think you were hearing young reporter Jimmy Olsen embarking on a jazz singing career. The first six tracks on the album, recorded in July 1956, are even sweeter, thanks to pieces like Frank Loesser's “I've Never Been in Love Before” and Donaldson/Kahn's “My Buddy.” The airy musical space, with its simple rhythm section of trumpet, piano, bass, and drums, perfectly suits Baker's understated style. Chet Baker Sings is a classic of West Coast cool jazz.
