Chet Baker In Paris - Vol. 3 Barclay 1956

Description

This session was recorded at Studio Pathé-Magellan in Paris, between October 25, 1955 and Friday, February 10, 1956. This record was the 3rd and last recorded for the Barclay label. In response to an offer from Nicole Barclay, Chet Baker arrived in Paris at the beginning of September 1955. On the 22nd — or perhaps the 23rd — he signed a contract for 7 records... (The figure was later erased and replaced by 3). When Chet entered the Pathé-Magellan studio on October 25, 1955, only one member of his original trio was still present: pianist Dick Twardzik had died of an overdose and drummer Peter Littman had gone home. Only Jimmy Bond, on double bass, was still there. Three tracks were arranged by Pierre Michelot — 'Chet', 'Dinah' — and by Christian Chevalier — 'Vline'. The trumpeter liked these arrangements so much that he decided to re-record them later in Los Angeles. On November 28 Chet returned to the same studio, this time with Raymond Fol on piano, Benoît Quersin on bass and Jean-Louis Viale on drums. Three tracks were recorded: 'Alone Together' and 'Exitus' composed by Chet's friend Phil Urso and 'Once in a While'. The day after Christmas, on December 26, the opportunity was offered to Chet Baker and Bobby Jaspar to perpetuate a partnership that had been established at the Club Saint-Germain since the beginning of the month. That day, within the All Stars, Maurice Vander replaced René Urtreger. Two tracks were recorded: 'Chekeetah' and 'How About You'. Chet Baker and Bobby Jaspar are in total symbiosis. One can regret that such a winning team was never brought together again. Finally, on February 10, Chet recorded 'Anticipated blues' and 'Tasty Pudding' as a quintet in the company of Jean-Louis Chautemps, Francy Boland, Edgar de Haas and Charles Saudrais. Text - Alain Tercinet.
