For their very first recorded cover, Chastity Belt takes on a cult classic from the indie rock catalog: 764-Hero's "Loaded Painted Red," from the album Get Here and Stay (1998, Up Records). Far from a simple homage, the Seattle band offers a delicate, atmospheric, almost spectral reinterpretation, infusing the original melancholy with a new clarity. Remaining true to the hazy spirit of the Pacific Northwest, the band stretches the track like a slow, suspended breath. Lydia Lund's guitar traces new lines around the emotional core of the song, while Julia Shapiro's vocals float with poignant restraint. "It's one of my favorite 764-Hero songs," she confides. "It was hard to do justice to the original, but we also had fun reimagining it in our own way." Released as a split 7" alongside the original version, this diptych seals the arrival of 764-Hero's catalog at Suicide Squeeze.
