Description

Following her critically acclaimed debut album, KNVF (Erratum Musical, 2021), Charmaine Lee returns with Tulpa, a bold project that pushes the human voice and electronics to their expressive limits. Where her previous work explored subtle textures and nuanced gestures, Tulpa is visceral and immediate, merging raw vocal power with dense layers of analog and digital processing. Drawing inspiration from both the physicality of 70s rock and the esoteric qualities of high-voltage tube amplifiers, Lee constructs a sound world that is both wild and futuristic. The album vibrates with saturated overtones, microscopic details, and dynamic shifts in scale, navigating between intimacy and immensity. Lee's voice was processed via a unique spatial technique, combining direct signal with vintage amplifiers used as loudspeakers, creating a rich feedback environment that is deeply immersive. Tulpa concludes with a meditative duo featuring bass clarinetist Ned Rothenberg, inspired by Noh theater, offering a moment of suspension and calm that resonates long after the album ends. Lee combines presence and apparition, materializing the Tibetan idea of the tulpa: a being created by concentrated thought, a metaphor for her sound practice where every sound becomes an act of imagination and perceptual transformation.
