Entire sections of modern English culture have been influenced by the contribution of the Jamaican diaspora. Generation after generation, millions of young English people have been introduced to reggae and sound system culture through the music brought over by the first Caribbean immigrants of the Windrush generation. Charlie’s father and uncle fell into the reggae cauldron when they discovered the sound system sessions of genre legends such as Channel One, Jah Tubby or Jah Shaka in 1970s London, and then passed on the virus to young Charlie by playing vinyl records on the hi-fi in the living room of the family home in Southend-On-Sea. Listening to Dennis Brown, Ranking Dread, Hugh Mandel, Johnny Osbourne among others, he definitely fell in love with reggae. Whether during his beginnings with Goldmasters AllStars or later when he immersed himself body and soul in sound system culture, his foundations are based on this discovery of the basics of the genre. After spending more than ten years in the sound system scene developing and refining his inimitable style, blending singing and Jamaican-style DJing, it was time for him to return to his ROOTS with a pure reggae album. With the help of the musicians from Room In The Sky studio who replayed the riddims composed by Rico O.B.F and Charlie, this album is part of the tradition of the live vibe of the origins. On ROOTS, Charlie P invites us to dive back into his source of reggae: vibrant, organic, introspective, questioning society and searching for inner peace.
