For his new Blue Note release, this exceptional live recording, Passin' Thru, finds Lloyd leading his New Quartet, made up of pianist Jason Moran, Rogers on double bass, and Harland on drums, a warm group brimming with intuition and offering music that is alternately contemplative and playful. Throughout his glorious career, saxophonist, flutist, composer, and great jazz mystic Charles Lloyd has expressed his music through a myriad of lineups with extremely varied orchestral configurations. Produced by Lloyd and Dorothy Darr, this album brings together seven Lloyd compositions covering a wide range of styles and moods - from the swinging, lively title track (first recorded in 1963 when the saxophonist was still a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet) to the brand-new, sober and nostalgic piece Shiva Prayer, written in honor of a dear friend to whom the album is dedicated.
