For younger people, he is, at best, a name they’ve come across deep in a discography or a retro playlist. But for their parents (or grandparents), Cerrone is a pillar of electronic music and French disco, with tracks like Give me love or Supernature. After not releasing a single original track for several years, he is back with a new project under his arm. While he had his biggest successes producing disco, the native of Vitry-sur-Seine is also a true funk enthusiast. Between 1972 and 1976, he even formed a group called les Kongas, with whom he played in Saint-Tropez, at the Papagayo. It was there that he was spotted by Eddie Barclay, his first producer. Later, the Frenchy would work with legends of the genre such as Earth Wind & Fire and Nile Rodgers. It is from this spirit, but also from that of African music, that he drew inspiration for his new EP. Due out on February 12, it is titled Afro. A first track from it, 2nd Chance, has been unveiled. It features the “veteran” Tony Allen. Now 75 years old, he was one of the leading figures of afro beat with Fela Kuti, whose drummer he was. The result is as convincing as it is original.
