In The Spirit World Now

Description

CEREMONY makes its debut on Relapse Records with an ambitious album, “In the Spirit World Now”! This record reveals CEREMONY at the peak of its creativity. The ever-evolving quintet from Rohnert Park draws on various post-punk and rock influences to create one of the most captivating and driving albums of the summer. “In the Spirit World Now” is a concentrated burst of sonic power, blending fury and anguish. Each track builds in intensity before falling back into a punchy, catchy chorus. “Turn Away the Bad Thing” sets the tone: the guitars coil around the driving bassline, while Ross Farrar sings: “It's getting harder for me to be alright /Eyes adjust to the dark /The momentum of all these last resorts built into me.” Tracks like “Presaging the End” and “Calming Water” give off an atmosphere that is both romantic and melancholic, while “Further I Was” and “Years of Love” are carried by Farrar’s rebellious energy, as he repeats the chorus with disarming detachment: “Years of love can be forgotten/In the hate of a day.” But the real gem of the album is the title track, “In the Spirit World Now,” an enchanting pop pearl with an addictive chorus and a hypnotic synth riff that stays in your head, Farrar chanting the track’s name like a mantra. “In the Spirit World Now” is a kind of nebulous, ectoplasmic place where appearances can sometimes be deceiving, he explains. “It means it’s going to get weird.” This album marks an important step for this punk band from Northern California, which has remained true to its identity as songwriters despite a considerable sonic evolution throughout its rich career.
