Nominated three times for GRAMMY®, singer Catherine Russell presents her first live album, Live at Jazz at Lincoln Center, recorded during an exceptional weekend at the Appel Room, with the magnificent backdrop of Central Park in New York. Invited to perform as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2023-2024 season theme, “Community and Consciousness,” Catherine Russell devised a program paying tribute to the Hot Club of New York, a community of enthusiasts who gather every week to listen to vintage jazz and blues on shellac 78 rpm records. There she revisits little-known treasures originally recorded by Hot Lips Page, Tiny Grimes, Blanche Calloway, Cab Calloway, Helen Humes, Eddie Barefield, her father Luis Russell, and other great figures. Daughter of pianist, bandleader and visionary composer Luis Russell and innovative singer-guitarist-bassist Carline Ray, Catherine Russell makes this repertoire her own as a natural inheritance. She demonstrates the full range of her artistry across eleven tracks spanning swing, blues and early jazz styles. Surrounded by an exceptional ensemble - Matt Munisteri on guitar, Ben Paterson on piano, Russell Hall on double bass, Domo Branch on drums - as well as a horn section made up of Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet, John Allred on trombone and Evan Arntzen on tenor saxophone and clarinet - the artist performs Mark Lopeman’s arrangements, evoking the bustle of nighttime Harlem, the spirit of the Territory Bands, traditional New Orleans jazz, the swing era and the roots of Rhythm & Blues. As special guest, tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman brings vibrant rhythmic energy to four tracks, while Catherine Russell breathes new life into a repertoire that few contemporary singers keep on their setlists today.
