At Source by Caterina Barbieri and Bendik Giske perceives music as an inexhaustible, essential, and elusive, yet fundamental source. Here we discover two renowned composer-musicians, building a sonic universe together within an intimate and autonomous collaboration, between analog synthesis and an innovative approach to the saxophone, giving birth to a unique sonic world. At once intimate and cosmic, the album explores the challenges and possibilities of their artistic exchanges, breaking free from conventional techniques to access the full richness of their sonic point of encounter. At Source bears witness to the sonic world born from the collaboration of two artists, exploring the limits and possibilities of interpretation by body and machine. It is not a matter of an exercise in assimilation, but of a fruitful exchange and a creative confrontation. The album draws neither energy nor outside influences, but instead focuses on exploring the depth of their respective playing. Barbieri and Giske first met in 2019 at Kunsthaus Glarus and were immediately won over by each other’s performances. This meeting led to exchanges about the power of transitions as a compositional force. Giske then contributed to a reinterpretation of Fantas for Fantas Variations (Editions Mego, 2021), an ambitious project to reorchestrate Barbieri’s work for saxophone and voice, a challenge Giske had undertaken two years earlier as part of ongoing transcription work. This request confirmed the convergence of our ideas,” explains Giske. Their new collaborative project then began during an artistic residency at the ICA in Milan in 2021, at the invitation of Swiss artist and curator Jan Vorisek, as the world was gradually emerging from lockdown.
