Description

Like a prophecy deeply buried under the sands of the Texas desert in Marfa, the collaboration between Cate Le Bon and Bradford Cox (Deerhunter) had an inevitable quality. The fourth installment of the collaborative EP series from Mexican Summer (following Dev Hynes of Blood Orange and Connan Mockasin, Ariel Pink and Weyes Blood, Dungen and Woods), Myths 004 finally brings the two creators together. The EP signifies a shift for both artists, allowing for greater spontaneity; the writing and recording were completed in just one week. While the record comes after Reward, Cate Le Bon's fifth album nominated for the Mercury Prize, and after Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared?, the eighth album by Deerhunter co-produced by Cate, Myths 004 is actually a snapshot of their very first meeting during the 2018 edition of the Marfa Myths festival by Mexican Summer. Cate Le Bon enlisted her trusted collaborators to add drums, saxophone, percussion, keyboards, and additional guitars. Among them are Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint, Stephen Black from Sweet Baboo, Tim Presley from White Fence, and Samur Khouja, all of whom contributed to the richness and diversity of the record. It is a masterful blend of softness, melancholy, surrealism, punk parody, and cynicism. The tracks resonate equally as songs of Cate and Brad, united by a powerful sense of joy linked to the creative and collaborative process.
