Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert

Description

In November of last year, Cat Power took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall to recreate Bob Dylan's legendary "Royal Albert Hall" concert, during which the artist "went electric," playing the second half of the show with an electric guitar. This infuriated many folk purists, one of whom even shouted "Judas!" at the time. Dylan's performance—which actually took place at the Manchester Free Trade Hall—was the subject of a bootleg film, mistakenly labeled "The Royal Albert Hall Concert," which quickly became a cult classic. Cat Power's interpretation of this legendary evening in 2022, nearly 60 years later, is both faithful and personal, as all her covers are. The audience was able to recapture the spirit of the original performance—including a "Judas" shouted by the crowd—through Chan's unique voice, which found new ways to dance over Dylan's meter and verses.
