American jazz musician Carla Bley (1936-2023), a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader, became an iconic figure thanks to her original and unconventional style. She brought sardonic humor and unprecedented sounds to jazz, respecting the codes while challenging them, making the complex accessible and the simple intriguing. Her writing combines atypical harmonies and bold instrumentation, creating a unique sonic universe, often tinged with irony. On March 14, 1984, the Carla Bley Band performed at Studio 10 of Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg. This ensemble of ten musicians included Michael Mantler and bassist Steve Swallow, who recalls an intense and inspired concert, driven by an exceptional collective energy. These recordings, preserved in the NDR archives, testify to the expressive power and humanity of Carla Bley's music. Each measure hints at a wink: a concert rich in imagination, originality, free spirit, and humor.
