Electronic Music from 1972-2022 seeks to frame fifty years of compositional activity by Carl Stone, starting with his first professionally presented compositions in 1972 ("Three Confusongs" and "Ryound Thygizunz," featuring the voice and poetry of Stefan Weiser - later known as Z'EV) up to the present day. This is both an archival publication marking Carl Stone's 70th birthday and an archival art document. In the spirit of disorienting repetition and layering, it is an archive of archiving. Carl Stone's practice emerged from the repetitive archiving process of his student work at CalArts, which involved preserving vinyl recordings by dubbing them onto tape. With around 10,000 albums ranging from the Renaissance to electronic works and music from around the world, he had to re-record several records simultaneously, creating collisions and serendipitous coincidences. Over the following decades, he explored various ways to compose this process, creating temporal envelopes in which found sounds - existing tracks or field recordings - can take shape. While the technologies he used have changed and the samples have varied beyond categorization, what has remained constant is his concern for organizing the temporal experience using fragments of pre-existing sound events. Carl's mischievous constructions, resembling collages of time cut out of their time, suggest that archives are neither entirely preserved documents of change nor living, utilized memories, but rather their interaction.
