Before becoming Caribou, Dan Snaith was a twenty-something student living in a shabby room in Toronto and recording his music on an old computer that struggled to handle the weight of digital recording. "Start Breaking My Heart," his debut album released in 2001 under the name Manitoba, still sounds today like the work of an artist in the midst of discovering his voice: a melody of a thousand colors, catchy percussion, and playground laughter, all woven into warm, tactile electronic pop. Reflecting on this album, Snaith shares that it was the first time he had a true revelation. He had been composing since his teenage years, but it was at that precise moment that he understood what he really wanted to convey in his tracks. This moment coincided with a chance meeting that changed everything: he met Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) at a festival in the UK. Hebden helped him release the album, marking the beginning of a career that has spanned a quarter of a century and many albums since.
