NO MERCY FOR LOVE

Still unknown on the rock map, the French band Cannibale owes its name to the fact that they practice "a kind of exotic garage" where the tropical humidity of the groove slowly devours all preconceived notions of what a Born Bad release should be. If there is cannibalism on "No Mercy For Love," it is more in reference to the Caribbean rhythms that are sometimes heard, as well as to this rural psychedelia, which makes this debut album a sort of anomaly in the land of the 35-hour workweek: an astonishing blend of cumbia, African rhythms, and garage rock; in other words, a sort of missing link between Fela Kuti, the Doors, and The Seeds. Following the recent "The Quirky Lost Tapes" by El Blaszcyk and "Rhapsode" by Forever Pavot - to whom Cannibale is sometimes reminiscent - this album is further proof of the label's open-mindedness, which also confirms the owner's passion for twisted destinies. Who else could have bet on a group of forty-somethings as white in their origins as they are black on the inside? Apparently, no one. "Releasing our album at forty years old makes us laugh. Of course we still believe in it; it's all we do, it keeps us alive." So, one can be named Cannibale and believe in resurrections.
