Cellist Sol Gabetta brings together three major works from the romantic cello repertoire, recorded with the French orchestra Les Siècles on period instruments: the two Cello Concertos by Camille Saint-Saëns and the Cello Concerto in D minor by Édouard Lalo. By combining the colors of an orchestra playing on period instruments with her own artistic personality, Sol Gabetta explores the contrasting worlds of these three concertos. Composed a few years apart, Saint-Saëns' First Concerto and Lalo's concerto both give essential importance to the orchestra, establishing a lively and close dialogue between the soloist and the ensemble. In contrast, Saint-Saëns' Second Concerto, written more than thirty years later, stands out for its formal breadth and virtuosity, demanding exceptional technical mastery and an expressive palette from the soloist.
