The career of Johann Sebastian BACH is generally associated with the city where he spent the longest and final part of his life: Leipzig. There, he was responsible for the musical direction of two churches, the Collegium Musicum, and the education and instruction of the boys at the Thomasschule. But before that, he held many other positions: he was an organist in Arnstadt and Mühlhausen (during his period of musical discovery trips to Luneburg and Lubeck). At the ducal court of Weimar, after serving as a valet and violinist, he became an organist and concertmaster. When he wanted to leave the service of the Duke of Weimar, the latter imprisoned him to convince him to stay! To no avail! In the service of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen, as the court was Calvinist, he abandoned the organ and sacred music to focus on instrumental music. In each place of residence, his language adapts to the needs of the roles. But Bach gives the impression that he always thinks the grass will be greener in the neighboring meadow!
