The Imaginary Music Book of J.S Bach

Description

This new recording presents the music of the Cantor of Leipzig from a different angle, that of the famous music books in which musicians annotated the pages and pieces they particularly liked. Thus gathered are works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the late 1740s, which can be described as intimate, including the trio sonata from his Musical Offering. The Baroque style of this "experimental" sonata is placed in perspective with the innovative style developed by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel in one of his own trio sonatas. Various arias composed by J.S. Bach are also presented in this exclusively instrumental ensemble. The ensemble even ventures into Mozartian territory, with the Aria and Fugue KV 404a, taken from two pieces by Bach that Mozart himself had annotated and arranged in his own music book. Finally, a chorale that Bach particularly loved: a three-voice fugue played here by harpsichord and flute. Carl Philipp Emanuel had it printed at the end of his father's musical testament, The Art of Fugue: "Before your throne, I will appear."
