For years, Cactus Lee has been quietly building a unique body of work, playing Austin’s country bars while releasing records at a steady, self-made clip. Lee’s Dream, his second album for Western Vinyl, emerges as a natural culmination of this journey: composed on the road, refined at home, and shaped by the tension between his passion for music and his love for family. Conceived during a month-long solo tour through the Midwest and American South, the songs began as rough sketches penned in vans and motel rooms, notably inspired by a visit to Guy Clark’s recreated basement at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Returning home amidst personal upheaval, Kevin Dehan began a period of introspection, crafting songs that weave together restlessness and resolve, longing and responsibility. Recorded at Fort Horton Studios with producer Billy Horton, Lee’s Dream draws on classic country forms and the spirit of the Sun era, guided by touchstones like John D. Loudermilk, Glen Campbell, and early Gordon Lightfoot. Made with contributions from a tight circle of collaborators, the album cultivates an intimate and authentic atmosphere, at once joyful and melancholic. Rooted in Texan imagery and rural folklore, Lee's Dream unfolds like a familiar fever dream, paying homage to tradition while subtly adapting it to Dehan’s distinctive voice.
