After their first album, I, released in 2023 and which earned them a strong presence on national airwaves, appearances at major festivals, and European tours, the Montreal art-pop trio Bye Parula returns with Something Out of Nothing, a second opus that broadens its aesthetic horizons while exploring a more introspective dimension in its writing. Like its predecessor, Something Out of Nothing was produced by Robbie Kuster (Patrick Watson) and recorded by Warren Spicer (Plants and Animals). This new album also marks the arrival of a team of collaborators, including Inuit singer-songwriter Elisapie, Adèle Trottier-Rivard (Bibi Club), Morgan Moore, and François Lafontaine (keyboardist of Karkwa), reflecting the meteoric rise of Bye Parula on the Canadian indie scene. The result is a mercurial blend drawing from the orchestral funk of Serge Gainsbourg, the melancholic melodies of Elliott Smith, the cosmopolitan rhythms of Talking Heads, and the intimate R&B of Dijon, all imbued with a 70s cinematic sensibility that blurs the line between sunny, hazy fantasy and urban sophistication. But the playful sounds of Something Out of Nothing cannot mask the underlying distress: this album envelops you musically while hitting you hard with its lyrics.
