Description

This album combines creative jazz energy, funk, and soul, continuing the experiments conducted with Sounds of Liberation. Surrounded by numerous musicians, including François Tusques and Clint Jackson III, Lancaster pays tribute to James Brown and Sammy Davis while alternating explosive tracks (Just Test, Dogtown, Rib Crib) and more meditative pieces, tinged with blues and soul (Work And Pray, Loving Kindness). He thus establishes himself as a musician capable of combining freedom of improvisation and a sense of groove. Trained at the Berklee College of Music alongside Sonny Sharrock, Dave Burrell, and Ted Daniel, Byard Lancaster quickly engages in free jazz before collaborating with Sunny Murray. Settled in Paris in the early 1970s, he meets producer Jef Gilson, who allows him to record four albums for Palm Records, including Funny Funky Rib Crib (1974).
