Mangelen Min

Description

It is rare for musicians at the forefront of experimental practice, working primarily with improvisation, to also be in tune with contemporary style and taste, and for their work, which goes far beyond popular or academic approaches, to result in an authentic new form that resonates simultaneously at both levels of this opposition. Yet this is precisely the case with Building Instrument, a Norwegian trio based in Bergen comprising Mari Kvien Brunvoll (vocals, samples, percussion, kazoo...), Oyvind Hegg-Lunde (drums, percussion) and Asmund Weltzien (synthesizer, electronics, melodica). On this new album, *Mangelen Min* (which follows their eponymous debut (2014) and *Kem Son Kan a Leve* (2016), both critically acclaimed), they blend electronic echoes of classical baroque, almost melodic drum parts, fragile but powerful vocals, references to Balkan music, and deep, soaring synth sounds that could be found on the soundtrack of a Nicolas Winding Refn film. The result is a continuously bewildering series of subtle and finely nuanced arrangements with incessant variations. Also imbued with an enormous sense of groove, *Mangelen Min* is also a danceable work.
