Buffy Sainte-Marie (born February 20, 1941, on the Piapot First Nation Reserve in Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada) is a Canadian Cree composer, songwriter, singer, and actress. She is particularly known for writing the hit song "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," which commemorates the Wounded Knee Massacre, as well as "Up Where We Belong," performed by several artists.
