This new album by the Bobo Stenson trio explores a vast range of influences. It features free improvisations, themes by Bill Evans (Your Story) and George Russell (Event VI, which is a piece taken from the album Living Time and also associated with Bill Evans), the arrangement by Anders Jormin and folk singer Sinikka Langeland of a Norwegian hymn Oft Am I Glad, a contemporary composition by the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo, a protest song by Wolf Biermann, the folk piece La Peregrinación by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez... This diversity of repertoire has become a hallmark of Bobo Stenson's records. But it is not so much this claimed eclecticism that leaves an impression as the way in which Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, and Jon Fält take hold of these themes, and, while remaining true to their original characteristics, transform them into music that uniquely sings to our ears.
