The death of Britpop nearly brought about that of Blur, its emblematic band. But they managed to reinvent themselves once again, drawing inspiration, under the influence of their guitarist Graham Coxon, from American indie rock with a lo-fi trend by bands like Pavement. This album, with guitars front and center, therefore straddles the line between typical Blur pop songs arranged in the new style (the hit "Beetlebum", No. 1 in England, but also "On Your Own" or the excellent "Look Inside America") and parodies of grunge ("Song 2" which, ironically, would give Blur their biggest American success) or Bowie ("M.O.R."). Entirely of its time, where every record is a layering of more or less openly embraced and mixed references, Blur ultimately offers us an unexpected and successful album.
