SCREAM HOLLER & HOWL

Description

Blue Moon Marquee writes and performs original compositions influenced by everything that swings, jumps, or grooves. A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette aka Badlands Jass (vocals/bass/drums) have played before a wide range of crowds in jazz clubs, Lindy Hop dance halls, folk venues, blues haunts, hospitals, prisons, markets, biker bars, dive bars, and prestigious festival stages. Colette not only commands the upright bass, but also brings the rhythm with her feet on a custom drum kit, all while singing in her signature honeyed tone. Cardinal’s distinctive, soulful voice bursts forth like a runaway bull while his guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz-tinged blues. The result of 9 years of rigorous touring across Europe and North America is the distinct energy and style of this acclaimed duo. Cutting a path through blues, jazz, jump jive, folk, country, swing, and Indigenous soul with an authentic spirit, their sound does not easily settle into any one category. It stomps and wanders through the wild, evoking a blend where Howlin' Wolf tangos with Django, Earnest Tubb fires off firecrackers with Cab Calloway, and Memphis Minnie rolls the dice with Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Their gift is bringing all these elements together without anything ever seeming out of step. They gather the roots and weave them smoothly with lyrics that often touch on the underbelly of society, threaded with elements of Indigenous storytelling and poetic cadence. “Blue Moon Marquee has a completely original style all its own. Modern blues doesn’t really get much better than this. It’s a great sound from an extremely talented duo,” says American Roots UK. With their highly anticipated 5th album Scream, Holler & Howl (SHH), Blue Moon Marquee has captured their most sophisticated collection of songs to date. Co-produced by Duke Robillard and recorded live to tape, SHH launches with a full band featuring some of Canada’s finest veteran players. Although they have mainly performed as a duo since 2013, over the past two years they have often performed as a trio or quartet with Darcy Phillips (Jann Arden) on piano and Jerry Cook (Colin James) on tenor and baritone saxophone. Featuring Duke Robillard. And with Darcy Phillips on piano, and a 3-piece horn section.
