As with their previous album, the quartet decided to do things "their way." They returned to Glasgow, KY, to Barrick Recording, the same place where they recorded their very first album and "Kentucky." But this time, the musicians took things a step further by self-producing. Additionally, in order to preserve the spontaneity and warmth of their music, the band chose not to "over-rehearse" their new songs, often attempting to capture them directly, while singer/guitarist Chris Robertson handled the mixing himself. "Family Tree" features 13 tracks of "Southern American rock 'n roll," the result of a collective effort that reflects each member's influences. The presence of two guests fits perfectly into the family concept that is so dear to BSC, as Chris's 5-year-old son participates in the chorus of "You Got The Blues," while Warren Haynes (Allman Bros/Gov't Mule) lent his voice and guitar on "Dancing In The Rain." The band first met Warren 17 years ago when they signed their first contract in New York. Family has always been important in the life of Black Stone Cherry. The father and uncle of drummer John Fred Young are the founders of the country rock band The Kentucky HeadHunters. Band members Jon Fred, Chris Robertson (guitar), Ben Wells (guitar), and Jon Lawhon (bass) are school friends who grew up in the Headhunters' rehearsal space, built on the Young family's farm. It was there, within those four wooden walls covered in posters of Cream, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, and the Stones, that these four kids honed their skills and began to build what would become Black Stone Cherry... On Saturday, June 9, Black Stone Cherry will be the second headliner at the Download Festival in England, where they will perform just before Guns N' Roses. It's no surprise considering that in recent years, the band's concerts in Great Britain have attracted an average of 12,000 spectators per night! The band will perform in France at the end of 2018, with the date of their Paris concert to be announced soon.
