Unbound

Description

Unbound opens with a unique, trembling chord that rises and falls before encountering a warm and enchanting voice, a voice that sings in a tradition heard for millennia in this river region of the northern United States. The music that follows is a soulful dialogue between the ancestral tradition of pow-wow singing and a contemporary musical palette. On Unbound, the pow-wow singing style blends with synthesized vocal modulation, and hand drums are accentuated by electronic rhythms - the harmonies and resonances here are as much cultural as they are musical. Geographically, Bizhiki is almost entirely a project created in Wisconsin, a collaboration between Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings, his adoptive brother Joe Rainey, an Ojibwe pow-wow singer, and multi-instrumentalist Sean Carey (S. Carey), who has been a secret weapon within the Bon Iver family for years. By regularly recording over the years - and amidst several projects from the members of Bizhiki, including two solo albums (Niineta by Joe Rainey and Break Me Open by S. Carey) - the trio has worked on an expansive, ambitious, and unique record that resembles no other music produced today. Unbound is a collaboration among a group of singers and musicians who exchange ideas within an open dialogue, deeply considering the resources to share, passed down from generation to generation.
