Two Cycles

Billy Bultheel's first solo album is an ambitious distillation of the sprawling litany of influences from the Berlin-based composer and his unique approach to localized field composition. A compilation of pieces created between 2016 and 2023, the album powerfully reflects Billy Bultheel's extensive performance practice and his collaborations with leading visual artists like Anne Imhof and James Richards. Drawing inspiration from industrial music and metal, as well as medieval and baroque polyphony, Billy has devised a way to present this collection of works face to face. The record is divided into two distinct cycles: the Snow Cycle, which brings together Billy Bultheel's electroacoustic and compositional work, and the Game Cycle, which gathers his electronic productions. Focusing on timbre, density, and the psychoacoustic qualities of common spaces, from warehouses to cathedrals, Billy draws indelible lines between seemingly distant concepts, merging the celestial and the earthly.
