Lady Day was born Eleanora Fagan. How much suffering does it take to express love, pain, despair, or life itself? Few singers have conveyed emotion like Billie Holiday. A jazz guitarist father who doesn't acknowledge his daughter, more interested in nightlife than family life, a mother who is a cleaner, cook, and occasional prostitute, leaving her daughter with aunts and in reformatories, a life of violence, rape, and abuse of all kinds. Between prostitution, prison, and a few performances in dives where the generosity of the clientele was the only hope for payment, Billie landed a recording deal at 18 with Columbia. This was the beginning of a recognition that has not wavered over the years. Few voices in the last eighty years have been able to move hearts as Billie Holiday did.
