After the death of bassist Scott LaFaro in a car accident, Bill Evans stopped playing for almost a year. He returned with Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings, recorded in May and June 1962 at Sound Makers Studio in New York with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Paul Motian. Moon Beams features a collection of slow ballads inspired by this romantic and dark period in the life of the famous pianist. Meanwhile, How My Heart Sings! contains all the more up-tempo tunes. Fifty years later, the recording remains painfully introspective, up-tempo or not. Bill Evans was the Van Gogh of jazz: a sensitive and troubled being, which he expressed in his music throughout his career.
