With 'Small Town' guitarist Bill Frisell and double bassist Thomas Morgan present a program entirely composed of poetic and telepathic duos, captured live in New York, in the enchanted atmosphere of the venerable Village Vanguard.
Frisell made his debut as a leader for ECM in 1983 with an equally intimate album, 'In Line'. The rich history of the guitarist with the label is punctuated by numerous records from his legendary trio with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano, including the masterful 'Time and Time Again' released in 2007. 'Small Town' begins with a tribute to Motian titled 'It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago.' 'Small Town' also allows Frisell and Morgan to pay tribute to the great jazz musician Lee Konitz with a cover of his theme 'Subconscious Lee,' but it also features several original compositions by Frisell in a country/blues spirit, such as the title track, which is profoundly melancholic. The duo concludes their program with a singular and poetic cover of 'Goldfinger' by John Barry, the famous theme from the James Bond films.
