Those who knew him in life said that Bill Evans was the most solitary man they had ever met, yet he seemed capable of forming deep and lasting relationships, at least when fate did not intervene. The June 1961 sessions at the Village Vanguard paired him with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, a group he would have kept for years if LaFaro had not tragically died in a car accident. Evans' playing on "My Foolish Heart" has influenced pianists ever since and is regularly cited as a source of inspiration by classical composer Gavin Bryars. The other favorite piece from the session is the title track, written by Bill for his niece, which once again shows that the solitary man had affection and commitment to spare for those he loved.
