Sunday At The Village Vanguard

Description

On June 25, 1961, pianist Bill Evans' trio, featuring Scott La Faro on double bass and Paul Motian on drums, recorded in the intimate atmosphere of the famous New York club The Village Vanguard the material for two live albums that instantly entered jazz legend. Released in late '61, just a few weeks after La Faro's tragic and premature death in a car accident on July 6 at the age of 25, "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" is the first volume to capture this magnetic evening, focusing primarily, through the selected tracks, on the exceptional virtuosity and musicality of the bassist, particularly highlighted in his near-telepathic dialogues with the pianist. In a true state of grace, collectively delving into zones of intimacy and interaction rarely achieved, the three musicians explore, through a refined repertoire of standards ("All of You" by Cole Porter, "My Man's Gone Now" by George Gershwin), "modern classics" ("Solar" by Miles Davis), and popular songs of the day ("Alice In Wonderland" from the eponymous Walt Disney film), all the expressive and formal possibilities of the trio, definitively shattering the traditional frameworks of the format to pave the way for the lyrical abstraction of a revolutionary chamber jazz.
