This "portrait in jazz" of pianist Bill Evans is fortunately much less austere and static than the one that adorns the album cover. At the time, Bill Evans is already an experienced and sought-after musician, who notably participated in Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and released a few albums under his own name. Portrait in Jazz is the first of the trio he forms with drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro. Although short-lived (Scott LaFaro dies in a car accident in 1961), this trio will mark history. On a repertoire of standards, the group seems to discover the square of the circle, but in a trio. This group is not a pianist accompanied by a rhythm section, but rather three musicians on equal footing, who converse in notes, stimulate each other, question each other, and reinvent themselves. With a crazy swing, this album is perfect for explaining to a young novice what jazz is and why it is good.
