Avocet/Ltd Art Print Edition

Description

Bert Jansch (1943-2011) is one of those musicians whose importance is not diminished by his passing. Even better, as the years go by, his works, both classic and singular, something like the high craftsmanship of British folk-rock, reveal an admirable patina. Already very inspired by the tribute paid to his colleague Shirley Collins last year (Shirley Inspired), the Earth label is reissuing several albums by the Scottish guitarist that are well worth a listen. Released after the dissolution of Pentangle in early 1973, *Moonshine*, Bert Jansch's eighth album already, marked a new beginning. Blending traditional folk and blues with a stylish yet unostentatious technique, the guitarist reminds us that he is also a touching singer. The title track alone, with its arabesque melody and flute and oboe counter-melody, makes Jansch a worthy counterpart to a Donovan. We also find the sparkling solos of "Oh My Father" and one of the best possible versions of "The January Man." But the true, little-known gem is a 1979 instrumental album, *Avocet*. Originally an adaptation of the traditional "The Cuckoo" by Bert Jansch, who transforms it into a tranquil eighteen-minute fantasia. With the collaboration of Martin Jenkins (violin, flute) and Danny Thompson (bass), he delves into an ornithological vein and, completing the cuckoo that became the avocet, five equally colourful birds make an album like no other. Special mention goes to "Lapwing" and its medieval Satie-esque piano, but the whole album is an enchantment.
