Frozen Refrains is electroacoustic composer BERANGERE MAXIMIN's fifth studio album, following albums released on Tzadik, Sub Rosa, and Crammed Discs. Across seven levels, the album explores themes of multiplicity, possible futures, subjectivity, dissonant emotions, memory as a force of imagination, reinvention and power. Her narrative is anchored in musical tradition whilst simultaneously defying it, incorporating musique concrète strategies and making acoustic transformations. Growing up on the French island of Reunion, MAXIMIN takes pleasure in contradictions and contemplation, sculpting fragmented sequences of loops as well as electroacoustic textures into “digital chimeras”. Her music connects the digital and the physical, isolation and lyricism, revealing melodies with abstract and complex sonorities.
