In 1963, Ben Webster moved to New York in search of new energy. He was immediately seen with Duke Ellington at the Basin Street East for the season's opening concert, played at Birdland with Gerry Mulligan's Concert Band, and performed at the Shalimar and Half Note with an ever-changing quartet of musicians.
This recording captures one of his hypnotic nights. The accompanying musicians, Dave Frishberg, Richard Davis, and Grady Tate, are more than twenty years his junior, but the language they share is transgenerational.
Some time later, Webster left the USA and spent the last nine years of his life in Europe, his new musical playground. He settled in Denmark, where he occasionally performed.
This album is one of his last great American recordings.
