Ben Harper Returns with His 18th Studio Album
"It was like I was getting a new lease on life and venturing into places I'd never been before. I forgot everything I had learned from other records, I wiped the slate clean and started from scratch," says Ben Harper about his new album Bloodline Maintenance. The result is a brave and immensely "soulful" work, largely inspired by the loss of a long-time friend and the persistent influence of a charismatic father with a versatile character. Bloodline Maintenance is a work that is both political and personally revealing. It is soul music, but never a sterile tribute to a bygone era. Harper acknowledges that much of the album's creation was fueled by an awareness of the passage of time. "I thought a lot about this notion of mortality and the people we have lost. Perhaps in the end, nothing matters beyond the moments we spent together."
