Under the name Belle and Sebastian, inspired by a French television serial, lies a Scottish band, born in a Glasgow night bar in 1996 around Stuart Murdoch (singer, songwriter). Starting with a limited edition of 1,000 copies of their first album Tigermilk, the band has built, album after album, a rich and varied body of work, one of the finest examples of English pop of its time. Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance marks the Scots’ big return since the release of Write About Love in 2010. Produced and mixed by Ben H. Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective,...) and their longtime collaborator Tony Doogan, Stuart Murdoch’s crew here succeeds in the unlikely feat of combining the youthful grace that made them almost iconic with up-tempo tracks featuring clearly embraced electro instrumentation. An album that largely lives up to its anti-dance stance and will not fail to surprise skeptics who judge them incapable of reinventing themselves.
