The multi-award-winning action-adventure game God of War was originally released in 2005. Its success was such that Santa Monica Studio developed seven other versions. The prequel, released in 2018 on PlayStation 4, recounts the journey of Kratos and his son Atreus through the Greek world. Manipulated by the gods of Olympus, they are driven by a desire for vengeance after killing their family. God of War was acclaimed by critics for its story, design, graphics, combat system, characters, and music. It was named "Game of the Year" by numerous media outlets and award ceremonies. God of War (2018) was a commercial success, with over five million copies sold in one month. It became one of the best-selling games on PlayStation 4. The original soundtrack, composed by Bear McCreary, won a BAFTA. It revolves around themes created by the artist for the main characters. Inspired by Viking folk music, McCreary used exotic instruments and languages from various Northern European folk traditions. The result is a soundtrack with deep choirs, powerful percussion, and strident brass, featuring Faroese singer-songwriter Eivør (Pálsdóttir). American composer Bear McCreary is best known for his compositions for television series such as Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and The Walking Dead, and won an Emmy Award for the main theme of Da Vinci's Demons. God of War is available in a limited edition of 1,500 individually numbered copies, pressed on turquoise vinyl. This box set contains a four-page booklet with liner notes written by Bear McCreary.
