The Second Symphony by the Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896–1967) is closely linked to his personal life. After his family separated in 1932, Flury discovered Ticino during his visits to his children in Lugano. He pays tribute to this region in this symphony, whose movements are inspired by the local church bells and three Ticinese folk songs. The work is rooted in the Brucknerian tradition, while also evoking the pictorial style of his friend Joseph Marx. Poème nocturne, more introspective, is an expansive reverie with passionate surges, close to the symphonic poems of Richard Strauss.
