Perhaps the best documented concert recorded at the Fabrik in Hamburg this May 1981. The whole band was present, Harry Edison and Joe Newman on trumpet, Beny Powell on trombone, Marshall Royal, Buddy Tate and Billy Mitchell on sax, Nat Pierce on piano, John Heard on double bass and Gus Johnson on drums... everyone except Freddie Green’s all-important guitar, which gave the Basie All Stars that distinctive rhythm. But no matter, this May 1981 recording made its mark, reached the serene energy and original spirit of the group, and the audience present that night left the venue with one of the finest concerts from this now cult venue, the “Fabrik.”
